Our roof has been tattooed!

That is what these little clever devices look like – rows of orange diamonds creating a tattoo.  Their real name is “snow gems.”

They help keep avalanches of ice and snow from falling off the roof and hurting people standing below on the ground.  The ice and snow get caught in the gems, and the sun has more time to do its job of melting them before they slide off and possibly hurt someone.  Great devices, especially in the Midwest where we get plenty of both ice and snow.
